The Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) aka the ‘G is more than just a sports venue. It’s a place where memories are made and childhood dreams come alive. There are fleeting moments at the ‘G that stay with you forever. Ask any sports fan and they’ll be aware of the MCG’s status as the home of sport and how it’s often described as the beating heart of this fantastic city. But it is also steeped in a rich history; established in 1853 in the Yarra Park precinct as the home ground for the Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC), who continue to manage the stadium today. The ‘G has been the home of Australian Football since 1859, was the birthplace of International Test cricket when a match was first played in 1877 and One-Day International cricket, played for the first time in 1971.
The MCG was the main stadium for the 1956 Olympic Games and 2006 Commonwealth Games, attracts up to 100,000 fans to the annual AFL Grand Final and comes to life at the end of each year when enormous crowds enjoy the Boxing Day Test. Other sporting spectacles to have been held at the MCG, including World Cup soccer qualifiers, rugby league State of Origin matches and international rugby union fixtures.
But at the ‘G, it is so much more than the Southern Hemisphere’s biggest sporting stadium. It has hosted Papal and Royal visits and housed US Marines, the US Army air forces and Australia’s own RAAF during World War II. It became the platform where artists such as Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran and Billy Joel have enjoyed playing to some of the largest crowds of their careers.
Nestled in Yarra Park as part of the wider sporting precinct, with an approximately 10-minute walk from the heart of the city, the MCG is also home to the Australian Sports Museum and the iconic MCG Tours, which is open every day of the year for tourists and the general public alike to visit seven days a week.
